9th House (Dharma Bhava)
धर्म भाव
What does the 9th house represent in Vedic astrology?
The 9th house, Dharma or Bhagya Bhava, represents fortune, the father, the guru, higher learning, long journeys and religious life. It is a trikona house and is classically considered the single most auspicious house in the chart.
Luck as a house
Bhagya is the closest thing in a chart to luck — outcomes that do not follow from effort. Classical texts rate the 9th as the strongest trikona and treat its lord as the most benefic planet in any chart. A connection between the 9th lord and a kendra lord is the classic source of Raja yoga.
It also covers the father (with the Sun), the teacher, higher and philosophical learning, pilgrimage and long-distance travel — the whole territory of what a person is guided by rather than what they build.
Common questions
- What makes a Raja yoga in a kundli?
- The classical definition is a connection — conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange — between the lord of a kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) and the lord of a trikona (1, 5, 9). The 9th lord is involved in the strongest of them. Raja yogas are considerably more common than their name suggests, and their actual effect depends on the strength of the planets involved and on when their dasha runs.
