What is my rashi (Moon sign) in Vedic astrology?

Your rashi is the zodiac sign your Moon occupied at the moment of your birth, calculated on the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac used in Vedic astrology. It is the sign most Hindi horoscope columns and daily rashifal readings are actually written for — not your Western sun sign.

Rashi vs. sun sign — the difference that trips people up

Vedic astrology reads the Moon's sign as the seat of the mind — how you react, feel and process the world day to day — which is why Hindi rashifal columns are written per Moon sign, not sun sign. It also uses the sidereal zodiac, which runs about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac most Western sun-sign columns use, so your rashi can differ from what a Western site tells you even for the same birth data.

Common questions

Why is my rashi different from my Western zodiac sign?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri ayanamsa), which is offset from the tropical zodiac Western astrology uses by roughly 24 degrees today — so the sign boundaries land in different places.
Do I need my exact birth time for this?
Ideally yes, since the Moon moves roughly 13 degrees a day and can be near a sign boundary; but the day is usually enough unless your birth was very close to a sign change.
What is rashifal based on?
Rashifal (horoscope) readings are written per Moon sign — transiting planets are read against your Moon's rashi, which is exactly what this calculator gives you.
