6th House (Ari Bhava)

रिपु भाव

What does the 6th house represent in Vedic astrology?

The 6th house, Ari or Ripu Bhava, represents enemies, disease, debt, litigation, daily service and competition. It is both a dusthana (difficult house) and an upachaya (growing house), which is why malefics placed there are traditionally read as a strength rather than an affliction.

The house that is difficult and useful at once

The 6th is the only house that is both a dusthana and an upachaya, and the contradiction is the point. It holds everything a person has to overcome — illness, debt, opposition, the grind of daily work — and it is also the house where the capacity to overcome them is read. A malefic here does not create enemies; it defeats them.

Vedic astrology does not diagnose. The 6th house's connection to illness is a classical signification, and nothing calculated from a chart is a substitute for a doctor. Any reading that treats a 6th-house placement as a medical finding has overstepped what astrology can honestly claim.

Common questions

Is a planet in the 6th house always bad?
No. Malefics — Mars, Saturn, Sun, Rahu, Ketu — are classically well placed in the 6th, where they give the strength to overcome opposition. It is benefics in the 6th that classical texts treat with more caution, because the house tends to consume what is placed in it.
