1st House (Tanu Bhava)
तनु भाव
What does the 1st house represent in Vedic astrology?
The 1st house, or Tanu Bhava, is the ascendant (lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It represents the self, the physical body, temperament, general vitality and the overall direction of a life. It is both a kendra and a trikona, the only house that is both.
Why the 1st house decides everything else
The ascendant is the reference point every other house is counted from. Get it wrong and all twelve houses shift, every house lord changes, and the entire chart describes someone else. This is why birth time accuracy matters more than any other input to a reading.
The ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so an error of even an hour can move it. Where a birth time is uncertain, a careful reading falls back on the Moon chart — the Moon moves slowly enough to stay reliable — and says clearly that it has done so.
Reading the 1st house
Three things are weighed: the sign on the ascendant, any planet sitting in the 1st house, and the placement and strength of the ascendant lord (lagnesha). The ascendant lord is the single most important planet in any chart — its house, sign, dignity and dasha shape the whole reading.
The 1st house is unique in being counted as both a kendra (angle) and a trikona (trine). A planet that rules both a kendra and a trikona becomes a yogakaraka, and the 1st house is where that overlap starts.
Common questions
- What is the difference between lagna, rashi and Sun sign?
- Lagna is the sign rising at your birth time and place — the 1st house. Rashi is the sign your Moon occupied, which is what Indian astrology usually means by 'your sign'. The Sun sign is what Western newspaper horoscopes use. All three are different, and in Vedic astrology the lagna and the rashi carry far more weight than the Sun sign.
