4th House (Sukha Bhava)

सुख भाव

What does the 4th house represent in Vedic astrology?

The 4th house, Sukha Bhava, represents the mother, the home, land and property, vehicles, formal education and inner contentment. It is a kendra house and its karaka is the Moon. It sits at the bottom of the chart and describes the foundation a life rests on.

Foundation, not comfort

Sukha translates as happiness, but the 4th house is more precisely the foundation from which contentment becomes possible: the mother, the childhood home, the land under one's feet, and the settled inner state that makes everything else workable. It is the lowest point of the chart wheel, the nadir, and it is read as what is beneath a life rather than what is visible in it.

Property and vehicles are read here, as is formal schooling — with the higher learning of the 9th house kept distinct from the 4th house's basic education.

Common questions

Which house shows property and land?
The 4th house primarily, with Mars as a co-significator for immovable property. Purchases and gains are usually read from the 4th and 11th together, and timing comes from the dasha rather than from the placement alone.
