3rd House (Sahaja Bhava)

सहज भाव

What does the 3rd house represent in Vedic astrology?

The 3rd house, Sahaja Bhava, represents courage, self-effort, younger siblings, communication, short journeys and the hands. It is an upachaya house — one that improves with time and effort — and malefic planets are traditionally considered to do well there.

The house of self-effort

The 3rd is parakrama — what a person achieves by their own initiative rather than by fortune. It is one of the upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11), which improve as life goes on and in which natural malefics such as Mars and Saturn are read as strengths rather than problems. A malefic in the 3rd is classically a sign of drive.

It also governs the hands and the mechanics of communication — writing, media, short journeys, and any skill practised rather than studied. Mercury governs the intellect behind communication; the 3rd house governs the doing of it.

Common questions

Why are malefics good in the 3rd house?
The upachaya houses (3, 6, 10, 11) are houses of struggle and growth, and a malefic supplies exactly the friction they run on. Mars or Saturn in the 3rd is read as courage and persistence rather than as affliction — one of the few places in a chart where a malefic is straightforwardly wanted.
