5th House (Putra Bhava)

पुत्र भाव

What does the 5th house represent in Vedic astrology?

The 5th house, Putra Bhava, represents children, intelligence, romance, creativity, speculation and purva punya — merit carried from past actions. It is a trikona house, among the most auspicious in the chart, and its karaka is Jupiter.

Merit, mind and children

The 5th is the house of purva punya — what is available to a person without having been earned in this life. Classical texts read it as intelligence, as children, and as the kind of good fortune that arrives unaccountably. It is one of the three trikonas (1, 5, 9), and planets that rule trikonas are treated as benefic for that chart regardless of their natural nature.

Romance is read from the 5th, marriage from the 7th. This distinction does real work: a love reading that only looks at the 7th misses the attraction entirely, and one that only looks at the 5th misses the partnership.

Common questions

Which house shows love marriage?
A love marriage is read from the relationship between the 5th house (romance) and the 7th (marriage) — typically a connection between their lords, or Venus involved with both. An arranged marriage tends to show more 7th and 9th house involvement. Neither pattern is a prediction; both are tendencies read alongside the dasha.
