Varshphal Calculator: your annual chart, Muntha and Varshesha

वर्षफल कैलकुलेटर

When does my varsha year start, and what is my Muntha?

This finds the moment the Sun returned to its exact birth longitude — your solar return, which falls near your birthday but rarely on it — and reads the annual chart cast for it: the varsha lagna, your Muntha sign and the house it activates from your natal ascendant, and the Varshesha, the lord of the year.

Why your varsha year does not start on your birthday

The Sun takes slightly more than 365 days to return to the same sidereal longitude, so the exact moment of return drifts against the calendar. It can fall a day either side of your birthday and at any hour. That returning instant is what the annual chart is cast for, and it has its own ascendant — which is why the varsha lagna changes every year even though the Sun's position does not.

A chart cast for your birthday at midnight is not a Varshphal. This calculator solves for the actual return moment.

Muntha, in one line of arithmetic

Muntha starts on your natal ascendant at birth and advances one whole sign for every completed year, returning to the ascendant every twelve. Its house counted from your natal ascendant is what a reading means by 'this year activates your Nth house' — it marks where the year's attention falls, not whether the year is good.

The lord of the Muntha sign matters as much as the house, and this calculator reports both.

What the free tool gives and what the report does

This page gives the facts of the year: when it begins and ends, the varsha lagna, the Muntha and the Varshesha. What it does not give is the reading — the Mudda and Patyayini dasha timelines that divide the year into periods, the annual planets' positions, and the Tajika yogas between them. Those are what the Varshphal report is, and stating the split plainly seems better than implying the free tool is the whole technique.

One thing to keep in mind either way: the annual chart details a year inside the frame the Vimshottari dasha has already set. A favourable varsha inside a difficult mahadasha is a better year within a harder stretch, not the stretch ending.

Common questions

When does my Varshphal year start?
At the moment the Sun returns to its exact natal longitude — near your birthday, drifting by up to a day, and at a specific time of day. This calculator solves for that instant.
Is Varshphal the same as a yearly horoscope?
No. A yearly horoscope by sun sign or moon sign is one of twelve generic readings. A Varshphal is cast from your own birth details for your own solar return moment.
How do I find my Muntha?
Take your natal ascendant's sign and count forward one sign for each completed year of age. At 30 that is the 30 mod 12 = 6th sign onward. This calculator does it from your chart.
Is Muntha in the 8th house bad?
It is read as a year where things move less within one's control and take longer, not as a year of misfortune. The sign's lord and its placement matter at least as much.
Does Varshphal need an exact birth time?
Yes. The annual chart has its own ascendant and Muntha is counted from the natal one, so both depend on it.
What is the Varshesha?
The lord of the year, selected from a small set of candidates — including the lords of the annual ascendant, the Muntha sign and the natal ascendant — by a ranking procedure. It is read as the planet that colours the year, and is a different idea from the Vimshottari dasha lord.
