The Twelve Bhavas (Houses) of a Kundli
द्वादश भाव
What are the twelve houses in a Vedic birth chart?
The twelve bhavas are the divisions of a kundli counted from the ascendant, each governing a defined area of life — from the 1st house of the self to the 12th of loss and release. Houses are classified as kendra (1, 4, 7, 10), trikona (1, 5, 9), dusthana (6, 8, 12) and upachaya (3, 6, 10, 11), and that classification determines how a planet placed there is read.
The houses depend entirely on the ascendant, which changes sign roughly every two hours. This is why house-based analysis needs an accurate birth time, and why a reading built on an uncertain time works from the Moon chart instead and says so.
VedikPatrika uses the whole-sign house system for the rashi chart, which is the Parashari standard, and computes Bhava Chalit alongside it for reference.
