Pitra Dosha

पितृ दोष

What is Pitra dosha in Vedic astrology?

Pitra dosha refers to affliction involving the 9th house, the Sun, or Rahu/Ketu in connection with them — classically read as unresolved obligations to the ancestors. Its definition varies considerably between traditions, and unlike Mangal dosha there is no single agreed rule for detecting it.

What it refers to

The idea behind Pitra dosha is old and is not really an astrological idea at all: it is the Vedic conception that a person carries obligations to their ancestors, and that unperformed rites or unresolved family matters leave something outstanding. The astrological detection rules — Sun afflicted by Rahu, malefics in the 9th, the 9th lord badly placed — are later attempts to read that in a chart, and they differ between schools.

This is worth being honest about. Unlike Mangal dosha, which has a precise and agreed definition, Pitra dosha has no single rule. Any site that gives you one crisp definitive test for it is presenting one tradition's view as the whole tradition.

How to think about it

The observances traditionally associated with it — shraddha, tarpan, remembering the family dead during Pitru Paksha — are practised across Hindu households regardless of anyone's chart, and they cost nothing. They belong to the ordinary religious calendar, not to a remedial industry.

VedikPatrika computes a basic Pitra dosha check and reports it plainly, with the caveat that the detection rules vary. It does not build a report around it and does not sell rituals to remove it.

Common questions

Does Pitra dosha affect children or marriage?
Popular treatments claim it affects progeny and family life, usually through the 5th house. The classical basis for those specific claims is thin, and the claims are frequently made by people selling remedial ceremonies. It is reasonable to note the affliction in a chart and unreasonable to build a prediction on it.
