The building blocks
What a kundli is made of
Four things, counted the same way for six hundred years. Every report on this site is built from them.
What a janam kundli contains →Graha
Sun to Ketu. Each carries a different department of life, and each is somewhere in your chart.
Bhava
The houses — the twelve areas the chart divides life into, from body and money to marriage and loss.
Nakshatra
The Moon's twenty-seven resting places. The one it occupied at your birth sets your whole dasha sequence.
Varsha
The full length of the Vimshottari cycle, in years, shared out between the nine grahas.
The twelve rashis
The zodiac, and what each sign is made of
Pick a sign to see its ruling planet, its element and a simple remedy for that planet.
All twelve rashis, in detail →Aries (Mesha)
- Ruling planet
- Mars (Mangal)
- Element
- Fire (Agni)
- Quality
- Movable (Chara)
A simple remedy for its lord
Tuesday. Say Om Angarakaya Namah. Give red lentils; keep your temper in hand.
This describes the rashi itself, not you. A real reading works from all twelve houses of your own chart — which sign you were told you are is only the beginning of it.
Straight answers
Four things you have probably been told
“Mangal dosha means the marriage will fail.”
Mars in those houses is common, and the classical texts list several conditions that cancel it outright. A reading that stops at “you are manglik” has not finished the job — the cancellations are the actual work.
“Sade Sati is seven and a half years of misfortune.”
It is Saturn crossing the three signs around your Moon. It has three distinct phases, they do not weigh the same, and how heavy it runs depends on Saturn's own condition in your chart.
“Kaal Sarp ruins everything.”
Whether every planet actually falls on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis is a yes-or-no calculation, and partial cases are far more common than full ones. It is worth knowing which you have.
“The right gemstone will fix it.”
Perhaps. We suggest at most one, and only to be worn after an astrologer has seen your chart in person. We do not sell stones, so we have nothing to gain from the advice.
The vocabulary
Words your report will use
Not jargon for its own sake — these are the terms a Vedic reading cannot avoid, so here is what each one means.
The full Vedic astrology glossary →- Lagna
- The sign rising on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born. The whole chart is arranged from it, which is why the birth time matters.
- Dasha
- The planetary period you are living through. Vimshottari divides a notional 120 years between the nine grahas, in a fixed order set by your birth nakshatra.
- Gochar
- Transit — where the planets are today, read against where they stood at your birth. Slow movers like Saturn and Jupiter matter most.
- Yoga
- A named combination of planets that the classical texts describe. Some are famous, most are conditional, and the conditions are the point.
- Dosha
- An affliction in the chart. Nearly all of them have classical cancellations, which is why the word on its own tells you very little.
- Antardasha
- The sub-period inside a dasha. It is usually what explains why one year inside a long period felt nothing like the next.
