12th House (Vyaya Bhava)
व्यय भाव
What does the 12th house represent in Vedic astrology?
The 12th house, Vyaya Bhava, represents expenditure, loss, foreign lands, isolation, sleep and moksha — spiritual liberation. It is a dusthana house, and it is the house from which Sade Sati begins, since Saturn enters the 12th from the natal Moon.
Loss and release are the same house
Vyaya means expenditure, and the 12th covers everything that leaves: money spent, energy given away, time in hospitals or ashrams or foreign countries, and finally attachment itself. Its reputation as the worst house in the chart comes from reading only the first half of that list.
It is also the moksha house, the last of the four moksha trikonas (4, 8, 12), and the house most associated with spiritual practice, charity and withdrawal. Ketu is comfortable here for exactly that reason. Foreign travel and residence are read from the 12th together with the 9th.
Common questions
- Which house shows settling abroad?
- The 12th house primarily — foreign lands and distance from one's birthplace — usually read with the 9th (long journeys) and the 7th, and with Rahu, which is strongly associated with foreign things. Timing comes from the dasha and from transits, and a chart shows inclination rather than certainty.
