2nd House (Dhana Bhava)

धन भाव

What does the 2nd house represent in Vedic astrology?

The 2nd house, Dhana Bhava, represents accumulated wealth, speech, the immediate family, food and values. It is a maraka (death-inflicting) house in the classical scheme and a key house in any reading of money, since it shows what is kept rather than what is earned.

Wealth kept, not wealth earned

The distinction between the 2nd and the 11th is the one that gets confused most often. The 11th house is income — what comes in. The 2nd house is what stays: savings, assets, family wealth, the capacity to hold on to money. A strong 11th with a weak 2nd is the chart of someone who earns well and keeps little.

A proper Dhana yoga reading looks at the lords of the 2nd, 5th, 9th and 11th together with Jupiter, and at the dasha running. No single house tells you anything about money on its own.

Speech and the family

The 2nd house also governs vaak — speech, and by extension the voice, the name and the way a person is heard. This is why name analysis is classically a 2nd-house matter. It covers the family one is born into and eats with, as distinct from the 4th house, which is the home itself.

Its maraka status is a technical classification about the timing of the end of life, used with the 7th house and with dasha analysis. It is not a warning, and it should never be presented to a reader as one.

Common questions

What is the difference between the 2nd and 11th houses for money?
The 11th is income and gains — the flow. The 2nd is accumulated wealth — the stock. Both are needed for a real financial reading, along with the 5th and 9th for fortune and the dasha that determines when any of it becomes active.
