What is my rising sign (lagna) in Vedic astrology?
Your rising sign, or lagna, is the zodiac sign that was ascending on the eastern horizon at your exact moment of birth. It sets the 1st house of your chart and is the reference point every other house is counted from — many astrologers treat it as more central to a Vedic reading than the sun sign most people already know.
Why the rising sign matters more than most people expect
In Vedic astrology, the lagna is the anchor of the whole chart — every house is counted from it, so a wrong or approximate birth time can shift which sign occupies which house entirely. That is why this calculator asks for as precise a birth time as you have, and flags the reading as approximate if you don't.
Two people born on the same day, even the same city, can carry very different rising signs if born a few hours apart, and very different temperaments read from the chart as a result.
Common questions
- Is my rising sign the same as my sun sign?
- No. Your sun sign depends only on your birth date; your rising sign depends on your exact birth time and place, since it tracks what was rising on the horizon at that moment.
- What if I don't know my exact birth time?
- You can still get a reading — mark the time as approximate and the calculator will note that the lagna may be less precise, since it can shift within a couple of hours.
- Does the rising sign change during the day?
- Yes, roughly every two hours the ascending sign changes, which is why birth time precision matters far more here than for the sun sign.
