What is my Navamsa (D9) chart?

This builds your Navamsa — the ninth divisional chart, read for marriage and for a planet's underlying strength. Each 30° sign is cut into nine parts of 3°20′ and each part maps to a sign, giving every planet a second position. It also marks any planet that is vargottama: in the same sign in both your birth chart and your D9.

What this calculator does

It takes each planet's longitude, divides the sign it occupies into nine parts of 3°20′, and maps the part it falls in to a Navamsa sign by the classical unified formula — (sign index × 9 + part), counted round the zodiac. The same rule applies to movable, fixed and dual signs; the apparent differences between classical statements resolve to this one line. The Navamsa ascendant is derived the same way from your rising degree, and house 1 of the chart below is the sign it lands in.

This is the identical D9 our paid reports read. It is produced by the same engine function, so a free chart here and a Premium Kundli can never quietly disagree — which is not true of comparing two different websites.

Vargottama, and why it is flagged

A planet in the same sign in both the birth chart and the Navamsa is called vargottama, literally 'best in division'. It is read as notably strengthened, because the finer division confirms the coarser one rather than contradicting it. It is one of the few varga findings simple enough to state without qualification, so this calculator reports it outright.

Why the birth time matters more here than anywhere

A Navamsa part is 3°20′ wide, which the ascendant crosses in about thirteen minutes. We measured this over 143 real charts: shifting the birth time by fifteen minutes changed the Navamsa ascendant in 100% of them, and by a single minute in 9.8%.

So treat a D9 built on a remembered birth time as provisional. If your time is approximate, the Moon, the dasha sequence and the Atmakaraka still hold — only 2.1% of those same charts changed their mahadasha lord at fifteen minutes — and the Navamsa does not.

Common questions

What is the Navamsa or D9 chart?
The ninth divisional chart. Each sign is divided into nine parts of 3°20′ and each part is mapped to a sign, giving every planet a second position. It is read chiefly for marriage and for how much strength a planet really has.
Is the Navamsa more important than the birth chart?
No. It is the same longitudes read at a finer resolution. The birth chart is the frame; the Navamsa qualifies it.
What does vargottama mean?
A planet occupying the same sign in both the birth chart and the Navamsa. It is read as notably strengthened, and this calculator lists any planet in your chart that qualifies.
Can I calculate a Navamsa without an exact birth time?
You can produce one, but you should not rely on it. In our benchmark over 143 charts, a fifteen-minute error changed the Navamsa ascendant in every single chart.
Why does my Navamsa differ on another website?
Usually the ayanamsa, or the node convention if Rahu or Ketu is involved. We use Lahiri and the Mean node, and state both on every report. A site that will not say what it used cannot be reconciled with any other.
Is the 7th house of the Navamsa about my spouse?
It is the house traditionally read for marriage within the D9, along with Venus's position in it. It describes tendencies and, with the dasha, timing — never a specific person.
