Shukra (Venus)

शुक्र

What does Venus signify in Vedic astrology?

Venus (Shukra) is the karaka of marriage, love, beauty, comfort and the arts, and it is the specific significator of the wife in a man's chart. It owns Taurus and Libra, is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo, and carries twenty years — the longest single period in the Vimshottari dasha cycle.

Venus in a marriage reading

Any serious reading of marriage looks at three things together: the 7th house and its lord, the karaka Venus, and the Navamsa (D9) chart. Venus alone is not enough, and the 7th house alone is not enough. Where Venus sits describes what a person is drawn towards; the 7th house describes the partnership itself.

Venus is also the significator of the wife specifically, in a man's chart. In a woman's chart Jupiter takes that role for the husband. This asymmetry is classical and it is worth knowing, because it is why the same placement is read differently depending on whose chart it is.

Twenty years is a long time

Venus holds the longest mahadasha of any graha — twenty years out of the 120-year Vimshottari cycle, a full sixth of the whole. A great deal of a life can sit inside one Venus dasha, which is why the antardashas within it carry so much of the actual texture of the period.

Venus and Saturn are friends, which surprises people. Both are concerned with duration and with what has to be maintained rather than won.

Traditional remedies

Friday is Venus's day, white and pastel its colours. Traditional remedies are donating white cloth, rice, sugar or curd, respecting the women in one's family, restraint in indulgence, and the beeja mantra Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah. Diamond is the associated stone and among the most expensive of the nine — a reason to be sceptical of anyone who prescribes it quickly.

Common questions

Does a strong Venus guarantee a happy marriage?
No single placement guarantees any outcome, and a reading that says otherwise is overselling. Venus is one of three things a marriage reading weighs, alongside the 7th house and the Navamsa chart, and the dasha running at the time shapes when any of it actually surfaces.
