Mangal (Mars)
मंगल
What does Mars signify in Vedic astrology?
Mars (Mangal or Kuja) is the karaka of courage, energy, siblings, land and conflict. It owns Aries and Scorpio, is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer, casts special aspects on the 4th, 7th and 8th houses, and is the graha behind Mangal dosha (manglik status).
What Mars governs
Mars is effort — the willingness to push against something. Classical texts give it younger siblings, land and immovable property, weapons and machinery, surgeons and soldiers, and the blood. Where Mars sits in a chart is where a person is prepared to fight, and where they are most likely to act before thinking.
Its three special aspects matter more than most people expect. A malefic that reaches the 4th, 7th and 8th from wherever it stands touches domestic peace, partnership and longevity from a great many positions, which is precisely why Mangal dosha is defined the way it is.
Mars and Mangal dosha
Mangal dosha is not a separate entity — it is simply Mars occupying the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the ascendant and, in most traditions, also from the Moon and from Venus. The concern is mechanical: from those positions Mars aspects the 7th house or the houses that support marriage.
The classical literature attaches at least as many cancellations to it as conditions. Mars in its own sign or exalted, Mars aspected by Jupiter, both partners carrying the dosha, and several age-based rules all reduce or remove it. A reading that reports the dosha and stops before the cancellations is incomplete, and it frightens people for no reason.
Traditional remedies
Traditional remedies for Mars are physical and simple: Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays, donating red lentils or jaggery, restraint in speech and temper, and the beeja mantra Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah. Red coral (moonga) is the associated stone — strengthening an already-strong Mars is rarely what a chart needs, so this is a stone to be especially careful with.
Common questions
- Is being manglik a serious problem?
- Far less often than it is presented as. Mangal dosha is a specific placement with a long list of classical cancellations, and it is checked from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus — a chart can show it from one and not the others. It is one factor in a compatibility reading, not a verdict on a marriage.
- Why does Mars aspect three houses instead of one?
- Sun, Moon, Mercury and Venus aspect only the seventh house from where they sit. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn also carry special aspects — Mars the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. This is standard in Parashari astrology and is one of the main things that separates it from Western practice.
