Mangal Dosha Cancellation (Nivaran)
मंगल दोष निवारण
When is Mangal dosha cancelled?
Classical practice recognises many conditions under which Mangal dosha is cancelled or reduced — both partners carrying it, Mars in its own or exalted sign, Mars aspected by or conjunct Jupiter, Mars in the ascendant of certain signs, and the dosha appearing from only one of the three reference points rather than all three. These are ordinary provisions of the technique, not loopholes.
Why cancellation exists at all
Mangal dosha is a placement rule: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Any rule that mechanical will flag a large share of charts, and classical astrology knew that. The cancellation conditions are the tradition's own correction — the part of the technique that asks whether the flagged Mars is actually strong enough to matter. A reading that applies the placement rule and stops has used half the method and reported the frightening half.
The conditions most consistently accepted
The most widely cited cancellation is mutual: when both partners' charts carry Mangal dosha, it is held to cancel between them. Beyond that, a Mars in its own signs Mesha or Vrishchika, or exalted in Makara, is read as too well placed for the dosha to operate as described. Aspect or conjunction from Jupiter is another commonly accepted mitigation, Jupiter being the classical restrainer of Mars. Several traditions also hold that Mars in the ascendant for Mesha, or in specific houses for particular lagnas, does not create the dosha at all.
Three reference points, and why partial dosha is different
The dosha is checked from the ascendant, from the Moon and from Venus. It is entirely common for a chart to show it from one and not the others, and classical practice treats that as a weaker condition than a dosha appearing from all three. Most free calculators check only the ascendant and return a single yes or no, which is why the same person is told they are manglik by one tool and not by another. Any honest result should report all three separately.
What cancellation does not mean
Cancellation is a statement about how the dosha is read in the chart, not a service anyone can sell you. Where remedies exist in the tradition they are the ordinary ones — mantra, fasting, charity — and they are prescribed on the strength of the actual placement, not on the label. Any offer to remove a dosha for a fee, or a claim that a marriage is impossible without a particular ritual, is not the classical position and is not what this site will tell you.
Common questions
- Does Mangal dosha cancel if both partners are manglik?
- This is the most widely accepted cancellation in classical practice — when both charts carry the dosha it is held to neutralise between them. Guna milan checks Mangal dosha separately from the 36 points, and reports each partner's severity rather than a single yes or no.
- Does Jupiter cancel Mangal dosha?
- An aspect from or conjunction with Jupiter is a commonly accepted mitigation, Jupiter being the classical restrainer of Mars. Traditions vary in how completely they treat it as cancelling versus reducing.
- Is the dosha cancelled if Mars is in its own sign?
- Mars in Mesha or Vrishchika, or exalted in Makara, is widely read as too well placed for the dosha to operate as described. Debilitated in Karka is read the opposite way.
- Why do different calculators give me different answers?
- Because most check only the ascendant, while classical practice checks the ascendant, the Moon and Venus. A chart can show the dosha from one and not the others, which is a weaker condition than showing it from all three.
- Is there a puja that removes Mangal dosha?
- Rituals exist in popular practice, but cancellation in the classical sense is a matter of how the chart is read, not something purchased. This site sells no remedies and does not treat any dosha as an obstacle that requires payment to remove.
