Kundli Matching: How Ashtakoot Guna Milan Works

कुंडली मिलान

How does kundli matching work and how many gunas are needed?

Kundli matching scores eight kootas for a combined 36 points, almost all of them derived from the two Moon signs and birth nakshatras. Eighteen is the conventional minimum and 25 or above is read as a strong match. Nadi and Bhakoot alone carry 15 of the 36, so which points were lost matters more than the total.

What the eight kootas actually test

Ashtakoot is a Moon-based compatibility screen. Varna compares broad temperament for 1 point, Vashya mutual influence for 2, Tara the fortune between the two nakshatras for 3, Yoni physical compatibility for 4, Graha Maitri the friendship of the two sign lords for 5, Gana temperament again for 6, Bhakoot the distance between Moon signs for 7, and Nadi constitution for 8. Almost everything in the system reduces to two placements per person: the Moon's sign and the Moon's nakshatra.

The total hides more than it shows

Below 18 is conventionally weak, 18 to 24 acceptable, 25 to 32 good, above 32 excellent. Those bands are convention, not law, and two couples scoring the same total can be in completely different positions. Losing 3 points across Varna and Vashya is nearly irrelevant; losing 7 to Bhakoot in one stroke is the second largest single failure available. This is why every serious reading looks at the breakdown, and why a result page that returns only a number is not much use.

Nadi, Bhakoot and their cancellations

Nadi (8 points) and Bhakoot (7) carry between them nearly half the score, and both are all-or-nothing. Both also have well-established classical cancellations — a shared Moon sign with different nakshatras for Nadi, a shared sign lord or strong Graha Maitri for Bhakoot, among others. A match that fails on paper and is cancelled in practice is common enough that reporting the dosha without the cancellation is the main way these tools mislead people.

What guna milan does not cover

Ashtakoot does not read the seventh house or its lord, the placement of Venus and Mars in either chart, the dasha periods each person is running, or the timing of marriage in either horoscope — all of which classical practice weighs alongside the score. Mangal dosha is checked separately and has its own cancellations. Treat the guna total as a screen that tells you where to look closer, not as a decision.

The eight kootas and their weights

The weights are fixed and always sum to 36. Nadi and Bhakoot carry 15 between them, which is why those two decide most borderline results.

Common questions

How many gunas are required for marriage?
Eighteen out of 36 is the conventional minimum and 25 or above is read as a strong match. Both are conventions rather than rules, and the breakdown across the eight kootas tells you more than the total does.
Which koota carries the most points?
Nadi, with 8. Bhakoot follows with 7 and Gana with 6 — so those three alone account for 21 of the 36 points.
Is 36 out of 36 the ideal score?
Not necessarily. A near-perfect total usually means the two charts align closely on Moon-based factors, and that same closeness can produce a shared nadi, which scores zero. Reading the individual kootas is more informative than chasing the maximum.
Does guna milan check Mangal dosha?
No — Mangal dosha is assessed separately from the 36 points, and it has its own cancellations, the best known being both partners carrying it. A complete matching result reports both.
Do we need exact birth times for both people?
The score comes mostly from the Moon, which moves slowly enough that a rough time usually gives a reliable nakshatra. Exact times matter for the pada, which some Nadi cancellations depend on, and for Mangal dosha checked from the ascendant.
Can a low guna score be overruled?
Classical practice does not treat the total as final. Cancellations for Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal dosha are part of the tradition, and the seventh house, Venus, Mars and the running dashas are all weighed alongside the score.
