Shani (Saturn)
शनि
What does Saturn signify in Vedic astrology?
Saturn (Shani) is the karaka of discipline, delay, labour, longevity and consequence. It owns Capricorn and Aquarius, is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries, aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th houses, carries nineteen Vimshottari years, and is the graha behind Sade Sati and Dhaiya.
Saturn is slow, not cruel
Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign and roughly 29–30 years to circle the zodiac once. Everything attributed to Saturn follows from that slowness: results arrive late, they arrive earned, and they last. The classical epithets — Yama's brother, the graha of karma — are about consequence catching up, not about punishment.
Its 3rd and 10th aspects are the ones that get missed. A Saturn in the 1st house aspects the 3rd, 7th and 10th, which is why Saturn's placement so often shows up in readings of career and of marriage at once.
Sade Sati and Dhaiya
Sade Sati is Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses counted from the natal Moon — roughly seven and a half years in three phases of about two and a half each. Dhaiya (Kantaka Shani) is the shorter transit through the 4th or the 8th from the Moon, about two and a half years.
Both are widely misrepresented as sentences to be served. What the classical texts describe is a period of pressure and stripping-back whose difficulty depends heavily on Saturn's own strength in the natal chart, which house of the natal chart it is passing through, and what dasha is running alongside it. Two people in Sade Sati at the same time can have very different experiences of it, and any honest reading says so.
Traditional remedies
Saturn's remedies are the most consistently prescribed of the nine and the least expensive: serving the elderly, the disabled and the poor; donating black sesame, mustard oil or iron on Saturdays; the Hanuman Chalisa; honest work done without shortcuts; and the beeja mantra Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah. Blue sapphire (neelam) is the associated stone and is the one traditionally treated with the most caution.
Common questions
- How long does Sade Sati last?
- About seven and a half years, in three phases of roughly two and a half years each, as Saturn crosses the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon. The exact dates depend on your Moon sign and on Saturn's retrograde motion, so they are calculated per chart rather than looked up on a general table.
- Is Saturn's dasha always difficult?
- No. Saturn gives results according to what it rules and how well placed it is in your chart. For an Aquarius or Capricorn ascendant, Saturn is the ascendant lord and its period is frequently the most substantial stretch of a life. Its nineteen years are long enough that the antardashas inside it matter more than the mahadasha label.
