Budh (Mercury)
बुध
What does Mercury signify in Vedic astrology?
Mercury (Budh) is the karaka of intellect, speech, commerce and analysis. It owns Gemini and Virgo, is the only graha exalted in a sign it also owns (Virgo 15°), is debilitated in Pisces, and carries seventeen years in the Vimshottari dasha cycle — the second longest after Venus.
The graha that takes its colour from its company
Mercury is described in classical texts as neutral by nature and benefic when alone, but it adopts the nature of whichever planets it sits with. With Jupiter it reasons; with Saturn it becomes methodical and slow; with Rahu it becomes clever in ways that are not always straight. This makes Mercury the graha you can least afford to read in isolation.
Mercury never travels far from the Sun — no more than about 28° — so it is frequently combust. A combust Mercury is a common and often over-read finding: it does not abolish intelligence, but it does mean Mercury's results tend to arrive through the Sun's agenda rather than on their own terms.
Where Mercury does its work
The houses Mercury most obviously governs are the 2nd (speech), the 3rd (writing, communication, hands), the 6th (service, analysis, detail work) and the 10th (trade and profession). Business, accounting, teaching, law, software and any craft built on precision are read from Mercury.
Mercury exalted in Virgo is an unusual case: it is the only graha whose exaltation sign is also one of its own. Practically this means Virgo Mercury is powerful, but the moolatrikona portion (16°–20°) is narrower than the exaltation and the distinction matters when strength is being weighed properly.
Traditional remedies
Green is Mercury's colour and Wednesday its day. Traditional remedies are donating green gram (moong), feeding cows green fodder, honest speech as a practice rather than a virtue, and the beeja mantra Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah. Emerald (panna) is the associated stone.
Common questions
- Does combust Mercury mean low intelligence?
- No, and this is one of the most over-read findings in a chart. Mercury is combust in a large fraction of all charts simply because it never moves far from the Sun. It changes how Mercury's results present themselves; it does not remove them.
