Ketu (South Node)
केतु
What is Ketu in Vedic astrology?
Ketu is the south lunar node — the shadow point exactly opposite Rahu, always retrograde, owning no sign. It signifies detachment, past-life residue, sudden loss, and moksha, and it is the strongest karaka for spiritual liberation among the nine grahas. It carries seven years in the Vimshottari cycle.
The other end of the axis
Ketu is always exactly opposite Rahu, so the two are read together as an axis rather than as separate placements. If Rahu is what a chart is reaching for, Ketu is what it has already finished with — capability that is present without effort, and therefore rarely valued by the person who has it.
This is why Ketu is described as giving results and then removing interest in them. Classical texts call it the moksha karaka: the graha most associated with detachment and with spiritual practice, and the one whose house placement often marks the area of life a person quietly withdraws from.
Reading Ketu carefully
Ketu's seven years are the shortest mahadasha along with the Sun's six. Like Rahu, it owns no sign and so gives results through its dispositor and its company — Ketu with Jupiter reads very differently from Ketu with Mars.
Because Ketu is associated with loss and with the eighth and twelfth houses, it attracts more fear-based interpretation than almost any other graha. What the tradition actually describes is subtraction rather than damage: the removal of attachment to something, which is experienced as loss only for as long as the attachment lasts.
Traditional remedies
Ganesha is the deity traditionally invoked for Ketu. Remedies include feeding dogs, donating blankets or sesame, keeping a simple spiritual practice, and the beeja mantra Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah. Cat's eye (lehsunia) is the associated stone.
Common questions
- Is Ketu in the 12th house good or bad?
- Ketu is comfortable in the 12th, which is the house of moksha and of release, and classical texts read that placement as supportive of spiritual practice. Whether it is 'good' depends entirely on what the rest of the chart is trying to do — the same placement that supports withdrawal can complicate a life built on accumulation.
