Kaal Sarp Dosha

काल सर्प दोष

What is Kaal Sarp dosha, and is it in the classical texts?

Kaal Sarp dosha is the condition where all seven physical planets fall on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. It is worth knowing that it does not appear in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra or the other foundational classical texts — it is a relatively modern addition to Indian astrology, and it is heavily used to sell expensive remedies.

What it is, stated plainly

Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, so they divide the zodiac into two halves. If all seven of the physical grahas — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn — happen to fall within one of those halves, the chart is said to have Kaal Sarp dosha. If even one planet falls outside, it is at most partial, and most traditions consider the condition substantially broken.

The twelve named varieties simply describe which house Rahu occupies. The names are evocative and the distinctions between them are not well grounded in any classical source.

Why we say it is not classical

This matters and most sites will not tell you. Kaal Sarp yoga is absent from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika, Saravali and Jataka Parijata — the texts that define nearly everything else in Parashari astrology. It appears in Indian astrological practice largely in the twentieth century, and it spread fast because it is easy to detect, sounds severe, and supports a large market in remedial pujas.

That does not automatically make it meaningless: astrological practice has always accumulated. But a reader is entitled to know that this particular condition has a different pedigree from Mangal dosha or from the Vimshottari dasha, and to weigh it accordingly.

How to read it responsibly

A useful reading of a Kaal Sarp chart ignores the label and looks at what is actually there: where Rahu and Ketu sit, which houses they occupy and aspect, what they are conjunct with, and what the dasha is doing. Those are real factors with real classical backing, and they are what actually produces the experiences Kaal Sarp gets blamed for.

VedikPatrika reports whether the condition is present, whether it is full or partial, and then reads the nodal axis on its merits. It does not sell remedial rituals, and it will not tell you that your life is blocked until you buy one.

Common questions

Is Kaal Sarp dosha dangerous?
No responsible reading treats it as dangerous. It is a geometric arrangement that occurs in a meaningful share of all charts. The people who describe it as dangerous are usually the people selling the remedy for it.
What is partial Kaal Sarp dosha?
When one or more planets fall outside the Rahu–Ketu arc, the enclosure is broken. Most traditions treat this as substantially reducing the condition. Whether the Moon in particular falls outside is often given extra weight.
