Ketu Mahadasha
केतु महादशा
What happens during Ketu mahadasha?
Ketu mahadasha runs for 7 years. Ketu is the south lunar node — a shadow point associated with detachment, past accumulation, sudden endings and spiritual inclination. Like Rahu it owns no sign, so it is read through its dispositor and through whatever planet it sits with.
The opposite appetite to Rahu
Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other, and classical practice reads them as opposite impulses. Where Rahu wants what it does not have, Ketu is associated with letting go of what it already holds. In a Ketu period this often shows as loss of interest in something that previously mattered, or as a turn toward study, solitude or practice. Texts connect Ketu to moksha — release — which is why its periods are traditionally read as inward rather than acquisitive.
Read Ketu through its dispositor and its company
Having no sign of its own, Ketu takes much of its character from the lord of the sign it occupies and from any planet it is conjunct. Ketu with Jupiter is a very different seven years from Ketu with Mars. This is the same method used for Rahu, and it is what turns a vague reputation for detachment into something specific to your chart.
Seven years, and what usually follows
Ketu's is the first mahadasha in the Vimshottari order, so it is followed by Shukra's twenty years — the longest allotment, and thematically its opposite. A Ketu-to-Shukra transition is one of the sharpest handovers in the sequence, from detachment to comfort and relationship. Knowing what comes next is part of reading any dasha: the periods are a sequence, not a set of isolated verdicts.
Common questions
- How long is Ketu mahadasha?
- Seven years, the same length as Mangal's.
- Is Ketu mahadasha a bad period?
- It is usually read as inward rather than outwardly expansive, which is not the same as bad. Charts where Ketu sits well can find these years genuinely clarifying. Its dispositor and its conjunctions decide far more than its reputation.
- Why are Rahu and Ketu always opposite?
- They are the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, and those points are always 180 degrees apart. That is also why they are always retrograde and why neither owns a sign.
- What are the remedies during Ketu mahadasha?
- Tradition suggests the Ketu mantra, donating blankets or sesame, feeding dogs, and some form of regular spiritual practice. Ketu is the one graha whose classical remedies lean toward practice rather than acquisition.
