Panch Mahapurusha Yoga: Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Shasha

पंच महापुरुष योग

What are the five Panch Mahapurusha yogas and how does each form?

The five Mahapurusha yogas form when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn sits in a kendra — house 1, 4, 7 or 10 — AND in its own sign or its exaltation sign. Both conditions are required. They give Ruchaka (Mars), Bhadra (Mercury), Hamsa (Jupiter), Malavya (Venus) and Shasha (Saturn).

Two conditions, not one

Phaladeepika states it in one verse: the five yogas are formed by Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn respectively “when each of them occupies a kendra identical with its own sign or its exaltation.” Both limbs are required — a kendra alone is not enough, and own sign or exaltation in a non-kendra house is not enough either.

This is where most descriptions go wrong. A planet strong in its own sign is a good thing to have and is read as such, but it is not a Mahapurusha yoga unless that sign also happens to fall in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house from your ascendant. Our engine reports each limb separately so you can see which one is met.

The Sun and the Moon are not included

Only the five tara grahas form these yogas. The Sun and the Moon are excluded by the verse, and no sixth Mahapurusha yoga exists under this scheme. If a reading offers you a Mahapurusha yoga from the Sun, it is not following this source.

Why an exact birth time matters here

A kendra is counted from the ascendant, and the ascendant moves one whole sign roughly every two hours. A birth time off by an hour can move a planet out of a kendra and remove the yoga, or put one in and create it. Unlike Gajakesari, which is measured from the Moon, these five are only as reliable as the birth time behind them.

If your birth time is approximate, a Mahapurusha yoga is worth confirming before it is built into any conclusion — which is also why every report we write states the chart's birth-time accuracy on its face.

Common questions

How rare are the Panch Mahapurusha yogas?
Less rare than their reputation. Each planet is in its own or exaltation sign for a meaningful part of its cycle, and a kendra is four of the twelve houses. One of the five is present in a good share of charts; all five together is what is genuinely uncommon.
Does a Mahapurusha yoga guarantee success?
The classical statements describe stature, bearing and achievement in the significations of that planet. Read them as a strong placement of that planet, not as a promise. Which dasha runs, and when, decides whether the pattern gets its turn.
Is the yoga cancelled if the planet is retrograde or aspected by malefics?
The verse states no such cancellation. Those factors are read as modifying how the yoga expresses. The honest report is: the combination is formed, and here is what else is acting on it.
Can one chart have more than one Mahapurusha yoga?
Yes. Nothing in the verse prevents it, and charts with two are not unusual — for instance Venus exalted in the 4th and Saturn in its own sign in the 10th.
