Kemadruma Yoga: the isolated Moon, and why it is rarer than claimed

केमद्रुम योग

What is Kemadruma yoga and should I be worried about it?

Kemadruma forms when the Moon is isolated: no planet except the Sun in the sign with it, or in the 2nd or 12th from it, AND no planet except the Moon in a kendra from the ascendant. All of those must hold at once, which makes it genuinely uncommon — far rarer than the readings that sell remedies for it suggest.

Both conditions are required

The first part isolates the Moon from its neighbours: nothing in its sign, nothing in the sign before, nothing in the sign after — the Sun excepted. The second empties the kendras: no planet other than the Moon in houses 1, 4, 7 or 10 from the ascendant.

Nine bodies have to avoid all of those positions simultaneously. That is why a chart genuinely carrying Kemadruma is uncommon, and why a reading that finds it easily is probably applying only the first half.

Two conventions, which is why answers differ

BPHS chapter 37 gives both parts as the definition. B.V. Raman, in Three Hundred Important Combinations, gives the first three conditions as the definition and treats the kendra clause as a cancellation that “some authors” reckon from the ascendant or from the Moon.

These are different rules and they produce different answers. We follow BPHS as canonical, and keep Raman's variant documented rather than merged — on the same chart sweep the variant reckoned from the Moon fires on 7.7%. If two astrologers disagree about whether you have Kemadruma, this is usually why.

On the fear around it

Kemadruma is described in grim classical language, and it is one of the most reliably monetised findings in Indian astrology. Two honest things can be said. First, when both conditions genuinely hold, it describes a chart where the mind has little support around it, and the sensible response is the ordinary one: build the support. Second, BPHS states no cancellation verse for it at all — so a reading that offers to cancel it for a fee is not quoting the chapter it names.

Common questions

Is Kemadruma yoga really bad?
It is described in strong language by the texts. It is also far less common than it is reported, because most readings apply only the first half of the definition. The first thing to establish is whether you actually have it.
How is Kemadruma cancelled?
BPHS chapter 37 states no cancellation verse. Later authors suggest conditions. We report the formation and say what the chapter does and does not contain rather than selling a cancellation.
Does the Sun count for Kemadruma?
No. The Sun is excepted from the condition around the Moon, since it is often near it. Rahu and Ketu are treated as grahas for the purpose of the condition.
