Neecha Bhanga: when a debilitated planet's weakness is cancelled

नीच भंग

What is Neecha Bhanga and when does a debilitation get cancelled?

Neecha Bhanga is the cancellation of a planet's debilitation. The standard conditions involve the lord of the sign of debilitation, or the lord of that planet's exaltation sign, being in a kendra from the ascendant or from the Moon — or the two of them being in kendras from each other. Our engine finds at least one such condition in about 39% of charts.

What cancellation actually means

A debilitated planet sits in the sign opposite its exaltation, and the tradition reads it as unable to give its results easily. Neecha Bhanga says that under certain conditions that disability is lifted.

It does not say the planet becomes exalted. The common claim that a cancelled debilitation becomes stronger than an exaltation — “neecha bhanga raja yoga” in its loudest form — overstates what the verses support. The sober reading is that the planet is freed to act normally.

The conditions, and one we deliberately read narrowly

The conditions we check are: the lord of the debilitation sign in a kendra from the ascendant or from the Moon; the lord of the planet's exaltation sign in a kendra from the ascendant or from the Moon; and the two of those lords in kendras from each other, which is BPHS 7.27.

On one point we read more narrowly than the literal text. A lord is not treated as being in a kendra from its own position. Taken literally, the Moon — which rules both a debilitation sign and an exaltation sign — would be in the 1st house from itself and would cancel unconditionally, so the rule could not discriminate for two of the seven planets. Measured both ways: the literal reading fires on 46.2% of charts, ours on 39.2%.

Birth time changes the answer

The conditions reckoned from the ascendant move with the birth time; those reckoned from the Moon do not, because they measure a distance between two planets. A report should say which kind of condition it found. Ours does.

Common questions

Does Neecha Bhanga make a debilitated planet strong?
It lifts the disability rather than granting strength. Readings that promise a cancelled debilitation outperforms an exaltation are going well beyond what the verses state.
How common is Neecha Bhanga?
In our measurement at least one cancellation condition is met in about 39% of charts — so a debilitated planet is more often cancelled in some way than not.
Is Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga a real thing?
The term is in wide use. What is defensible is that a cancelled debilitation removes an obstacle. Treating it as a guarantee of sudden rise is the part that is not supported.
