Dhana Yoga: the wealth combinations, and what they require

धन योग

What is Dhana yoga and which combinations count as one?

Dhana yogas are the combinations classically read for wealth. The best-sourced group is Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra chapter 41, which pairs the lord of the 5th with the 9th or 11th across seven verses. A second common modern rule pairs the 2nd lord with the 11th lord; it is widely used but we could not trace it to either canonical wealth chapter.

Which houses carry wealth

Four houses do the work. The 2nd is what you accumulate and hold. The 11th is what comes in — gains, income, networks. The 5th and 9th are the trikonas of fortune, read as the merit behind opportunity. A wealth combination is generally a link between the rulers of these.

What we could and could not source

BPHS chapter 41 gives seven verses of one shape: the 5th house in a particular planet's sign, that planet with it, and another specific planet in the 11th. These are traceable and we detect them as the Panchama-Labha group.

The rule most sites lead with — the 2nd lord joined to the 11th lord — we could not find in BPHS chapter 41 or in Phaladeepika chapter 5, which builds wealth on the 10th lord's navamsa instead. We still detect it, because changing a widely used rule needs a source as much as adding one does. But we mark it as untraced rather than quoting a verse that does not exist.

That distinction is the entire reason this page is worth reading. Wealth yogas are where astrology writing is loosest, because the subject sells.

Common questions

Does a Dhana yoga mean I will become wealthy?
No. It names a route that exists in the chart. Whether and when it gives results depends on the strength of the planets involved and on the dasha sequence, and no chart reading can give an amount.
How many Dhana yogas are there?
There is no fixed list. BPHS chapter 41 alone gives several, and later authors add more. Counting them is less useful than knowing which ones a given reading is relying on and where each comes from.
Is the 2nd lord with the 11th lord a real Dhana yoga?
It is in near-universal modern use, and we detect it. We could not trace it to the canonical wealth chapters, so we do not attach a verse to it. Those are both honest statements and they belong together.
