Bhakoot Koota and Bhakoot Dosha
भकूट कूट
What is Bhakoot dosha and can it be cancelled?
Bhakoot koota carries 7 points of the 36 and measures the distance between the two Moon signs. The 2-12, 5-9 and 6-8 relationships score zero and are together called Bhakoot dosha. It is widely held to be cancelled when the two Moon-sign lords are the same planet, or when Graha Maitri is strong.
The three distances that score zero
Count from one Moon sign to the other and the relationship falls into one of twelve positions. Three of them are read as unfavourable: 2-12, 5-9 and 6-8. Classical texts associate them loosely with strain in different areas, and because Bhakoot carries seven points, any one of them costs nearly a fifth of the whole score in a single stroke. That is why a match can score in the low twenties and still be reported as strong once the reason for the loss is read.
The two cancellations
Bhakoot dosha has two widely accepted cancellations. The first is when both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet — Mesha and Vrishchika share Mars, Vrishabha and Tula share Venus, and so on — which neutralises the distance. The second is a strong Graha Maitri between the two sign lords. A result page that reports the dosha and omits both is telling you half the tradition, and it is the half that produces anxiety rather than information.
Bhakoot is where a high-scoring match most often fails
Because it is worth seven points and depends only on the relationship between two signs, Bhakoot is the most common single reason an otherwise strong match drops below the conventional eighteen-point threshold. Reading the total without reading which koota produced the loss is the mistake this makes most costly: losing seven points to Bhakoot with a valid cancellation is a very different situation from losing seven points spread across four kootas with no cancellation available.
Common questions
- What is Bhakoot dosha?
- It is the zero score in Bhakoot koota, which occurs when the two Moon signs stand in a 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 relationship. It costs all seven of the koota's points.
- Can Bhakoot dosha be cancelled?
- Yes, by two widely accepted conditions: both Moon signs being ruled by the same planet, or a strong Graha Maitri between the two sign lords. The calculator reports whether either applies.
- How many points does Bhakoot carry?
- Seven out of 36 — the second largest weight after Nadi's eight.
- Is a 6-8 Bhakoot worse than a 2-12?
- Traditions differ, and some read 6-8 as the most serious of the three. The classical rule treats all three as scoring zero, and the calculator reports which relationship applies so it can be weighed rather than flattened.
