Vrishabha Rashi (Taurus)

वृषभ

What is Vrishabha rashi (Taurus) in Vedic astrology?

Vrishabha (वृषभ), the Taurus sign, is the 2nd rashi of the sidereal zodiac. Its lord is Venus, its element is earth and its quality is fixed (sthira). It spans Krittika (padas 2–4), Rohini, Mrigashira (padas 1–2). In Vedic astrology "your rashi" means the sign your Moon occupied at birth, not your Sun sign.

The character of Vrishabha

Fixed earth ruled by Venus — the sign of accumulation, patience and physical comfort. Classical texts give Vrishabha steadiness, an eye for quality, and considerable resistance to being moved.

It holds the Moon's exaltation and Rohini, the most fertile nakshatra, which is why Vrishabha carries strong classical associations with wealth that grows slowly and stays.

Sidereal, not tropical — why your sign may differ

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, measured from the equinox. The two have drifted roughly 24° apart, which is why a person who has always been told they are one Western sign is frequently the previous sign in a Vedic chart. Neither system is wrong; they measure from different reference points.

VedikPatrika uses the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, which is the Indian government standard and the one Drik Panchang and most Indian almanacs follow. Every calculation on this site is sidereal and Lahiri-based, so the Vrishabha described here is the Vrishabha of a Vedic chart.

Vrishabha as an ascendant

When Vrishabha rises at birth it becomes the 1st house, and Venus becomes the lagna lord — the single most important planet in that chart. Its house, sign, dignity and dasha shape the whole reading, which is why two people with the same Moon sign but different ascendants get very different charts.

The ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so it needs an accurate birth time. Where the birth time is uncertain, a careful reading works from the Moon chart instead and says so rather than presenting an unreliable ascendant as settled.

Common questions

Which planet rules Vrishabha rashi?
Venus is the lord of Vrishabha. In a chart with Vrishabha rising, Venus becomes the ascendant lord and its condition carries more weight than any other single placement.
Is my rashi my Sun sign or my Moon sign?
In Indian astrology 'rashi' means the sidereal sign your Moon occupied at birth. This is what a rashifal is calculated from and what is used for naming, matching and most day-to-day astrology. The Sun sign is a Western convention and is not what 'rashi' refers to.
