Griha Pravesh Muhurat: Choosing a Date

गृह प्रवेश मुहूर्त

How is a griha pravesh muhurat chosen?

A griha pravesh date is selected on the same panchang basis as any muhurta — favourable tithi, nakshatra, vaar and yoga — with a preference for fixed and movable nakshatras depending on which of the three classical types of entry applies. The daily inauspicious windows are excluded and the ascendant at the chosen hour is checked.

Three kinds of entry, treated differently

Classical texts distinguish three cases. Apoorva is entry into a newly built house on land newly acquired. Sapoorva is returning to a house one already owns after being away. Dwandwa is re-entry after significant repair or rebuilding. The three are not identical in what they require, and the distinction matters when a family is told a date is unsuitable — the rule being applied may be for a different case than theirs.

How a date is filtered

The nakshatras most often listed as favourable are Rohini, Mrigashira, the three Uttara nakshatras, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati. Rikta tithis and Amavasya are avoided, as are the periods kept clear for auspicious work generally — Chaturmas and the Sun's transit through Dhanu and Meena. Once a date passes, the hour is chosen so that the ascendant is favourable and the daily inauspicious windows are avoided.

Reading the panchang for yourself

Every input this selection needs — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sunrise, and the Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika windows — is computed on this site's panchang for any month and any place. That does not replace a practitioner's judgement about which rule applies to your case, but it does mean the underlying data is something you can check rather than take on trust.

Common questions

Which nakshatras are considered good for griha pravesh?
Rohini, Mrigashira, the three Uttara nakshatras, Chitra, Anuradha and Revati appear in most classical lists. Regional practice varies.
What are the three types of griha pravesh?
Apoorva — entering a newly built house on newly acquired land. Sapoorva — returning to a house you already own. Dwandwa — re-entering after major repair or rebuilding. The rules applied differ between them.
Can griha pravesh be done during Chaturmas?
It is traditionally avoided in much of north Indian practice, along with the Sun's transit through Dhanu and Meena. Conventions vary by region and community.
Where can I check the panchang for a date myself?
The site's Hindu calendar computes tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sunrise and the daily inauspicious windows for any month and any place, so the inputs behind a muhurat are all verifiable.
