Muhurat: Choosing an Auspicious Time

मुहूर्त

What is a muhurat and how is one chosen?

Muhurta is the branch of Vedic astrology that selects a favourable moment to begin something. A date is filtered on the five limbs of the panchang — tithi, vaar, nakshatra, yoga and karana — then an hour is chosen whose ascendant and Moon placement are sound, with the daily inauspicious windows excluded.

What muhurta is, and what it is not

Muhurta is one of the recognised branches of Jyotish, alongside natal astrology and horary. Its question is narrow and practical: given that something is going to be started, when is the better moment to start it. It does not claim to change outcomes that a birth chart has already indicated, and it does not substitute for reading that chart. The word itself names a unit of time — two ghatis, roughly forty-eight minutes — which is about the resolution at which the technique operates.

The panchang is the filter

Selection begins with the five limbs. Tithi, the lunar day; vaar, the weekday; nakshatra, the Moon's constellation; yoga, derived from the combined longitudes of Sun and Moon; and karana, half a tithi. Different undertakings favour different combinations — the nakshatras listed for a marriage are not the same as those listed for beginning study or entering a house. Rikta tithis and Amavasya are broadly avoided for auspicious work.

Then the hour inside the day

A favourable date still contains unfavourable hours. The ascendant rising at the chosen moment matters, and so does where the Moon sits relative to it. The daily inauspicious spans — Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda and Gulika — are excluded, and Abhijit Muhurat around solar noon is the one span classically treated as favourable in its own right. All of these depend on local sunrise, which is why a muhurat is only meaningful for a stated place.

Where the calculations here come from

Every quantity this branch needs is computed on this site rather than quoted: the panchang for any month and place, sunrise and sunset, the three inauspicious windows and Abhijit. The baby birth muhurat calculator applies the same method to a specific question — scoring every moment inside a medically approved window and reporting the best spans rather than a single false-precision second.

Common questions

What does muhurat mean?
It names both the branch of astrology that selects auspicious times and a unit of time — two ghatis, about forty-eight minutes, which is roughly the resolution the technique works at.
What are the five limbs of the panchang?
Tithi (lunar day), vaar (weekday), nakshatra (the Moon's constellation), yoga (from the combined longitudes of Sun and Moon) and karana (half a tithi). A muhurat is filtered on all five.
Does a good muhurat guarantee a good outcome?
No, and classical practice does not claim it. Muhurta selects a more favourable moment to begin something. It does not override what a birth chart indicates and is not a substitute for reading one.
Why does a muhurat need a place, not just a date?
Because the daily windows and the ascendant at any given hour are calculated from local sunrise, which changes with latitude, longitude and season. A muhurat quoted without a place is not usable.
Is Abhijit Muhurat good for everything?
It is the one classically auspicious span in the daily scheme, centred on solar noon, and is often used when no better window is available. Some traditions exclude it on Wednesdays.
