Shani Gochar: how Saturn's transit is actually read
शनि गोचर
What is Shani gochar and how does Saturn's transit affect me?
Shani gochar is Saturn's movement through the signs, about two and a half years in each and roughly 29½ years for the full circuit. It is read from your Moon sign: the 12th, 1st and 2nd from it give Sade Sati, and the 4th and 8th give the two Dhaiya periods. Which house it crosses for your ascendant decides the area of life.
Two and a half years per sign, and why that matters
Saturn is the slowest of the classical planets, taking roughly two and a half years to cross a sign and about twenty-nine and a half years to return to where it started. That slowness is the whole character of the transit: Saturn does not produce events on a given day, it produces conditions that hold for years.
It also means a Saturn transit cannot explain something that happened last Tuesday. If a reading attributes a single incident to Saturn's sign position, ask what changed that week, because the sign did not.
Counted from the Moon, then from the ascendant
The classical convention for transits is to count from the janma rashi, the sign the Moon occupied at birth. This is why Sade Sati is defined as Saturn in the 12th, 1st or 2nd from the Moon rather than from the ascendant — and why two people born the same day, in the same city, hours apart, can be in the same Sade Sati phase.
The ascendant is then read as a second layer: the same transit crossing your 10th house speaks to work, crossing your 4th to home and family. Both readings are used, and a report that gives only one has given you half the frame.
Retrograde, and why a phase can seem to end and come back
Saturn turns retrograde for about four and a half months a year. Near a sign boundary this means it can enter a new sign, turn back into the old one, and enter again months later. A phase that appeared to end can therefore return for a while.
This is an ordinary feature of the geometry, not a sign of anything. It is also why a date given to the nearest day matters: the boundary crossings are what an ephemeris is for, and why we do not print them on a page that will not be updated.
Common questions
- How long does Saturn stay in one sign?
- About two and a half years, with retrograde motion sometimes pushing a boundary crossing back and forth. The full circuit of the zodiac takes roughly twenty-nine and a half years.
- Is Shani gochar always difficult?
- No. Saturn's transit is read as pressure to do things properly rather than as misfortune. Which house it crosses for you, and whether Saturn is well placed in your birth chart, change the reading considerably.
- Should I read Saturn's transit from the Moon or the ascendant?
- Both, in that order. The Moon sign is the classical frame for transits and defines Sade Sati and the Dhaiya periods; the ascendant tells you which area of life the same transit is crossing.
- Where can I find Saturn's exact transit dates for my chart?
- From an ephemeris-based calculation rather than from an article. Our free Sade Sati calculator gives the phases and dates for your Moon sign, and the Saturn Transit report covers the house-by-house reading with its date ranges.
