Guru Gochar: Jupiter's transit, and the year it defines
गुरु गोचर
What is Guru gochar and what does Jupiter's transit bring?
Guru gochar is Jupiter's movement through the signs, about one year in each and roughly twelve years for the full circuit. Because it changes sign annually, it is the transit most often read as setting the tone of a year. It is counted from the Moon sign, and the houses it crosses are read for growth, opportunity and expansion.
Why Jupiter's transit is the one people track
Jupiter changes sign roughly once a year. That cadence matches how people actually think about their lives — this year was good, last year was hard — so Jupiter's transit is the one most often used to characterise a year as a whole.
Classically it is the significator of growth, learning, guidance and children, and its transit is read for where expansion is available. The traditional reckoning counts the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon as favourable and the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th as difficult, and that is a convention worth knowing because so many readings use it without naming it.
What a favourable transit does and does not promise
A supportive Jupiter transit is read as a year in which effort meets less resistance — openings appear, people help, decisions get made. It is not read as a year in which things happen without effort, and the classical texts do not treat it that way either.
It is also only one layer. The mahadasha running underneath is the longer frame, and a favourable transit during a difficult dasha reads differently from the same transit during a supportive one. Any reading that gives you the transit without the dasha is working with one of the two hands.
Common questions
- How long is Jupiter in one sign?
- About a year, which is why it is the transit most often used to describe a year. Retrograde motion can move the boundary crossing by weeks.
- Which Jupiter transits are considered good?
- The traditional reckoning from the Moon counts the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th as favourable and the 3rd, 6th, 8th and 12th as difficult. It is a convention, not a verdict, and the rest of the chart modifies it.
- Does Jupiter's transit decide marriage or children?
- Jupiter's transit over the relevant houses is one of the factors a reading considers for timing, alongside the dasha sequence and the natal chart. On its own it decides nothing, and no honest reading will state a date as a certainty.
