Sarvashtakavarga (SAV): reading the bindu totals in your chart
सर्वाष्टकवर्ग
What do the Sarvashtakavarga numbers in my kundli mean?
Sarvashtakavarga gives each of the twelve houses a single score, called bindus, by adding up the contributions of the seven planets. A house's total runs from 0 to 56 and the whole chart sums to 337, so the average house carries about 28. Houses above that are read as better supported, and houses below it as needing more effort.
What the number actually counts
Each of the seven planets casts a benefic point — a bindu — onto certain houses, counted from its own position and from the ascendant, following a fixed classical table. Add up every planet's contribution to a house and you get that house's Sarvashtakavarga total.
So a bindu count is not a measure of good fortune. It is a count of how many of the classical contributions happen to land on that house in your chart. That is a narrower claim than most readings make of it, and it is the one the arithmetic supports.
How to read your own row
The whole chart always sums to 337, so the twelve houses share a fixed quantity and the only meaningful reading is relative. An average house carries about 28. Above roughly 30 is read as well supported; below roughly 25 as a house that gives its results with more effort.
Compare houses within your own chart, never across two people's charts. Because the total is fixed, a high score somewhere always means a low score elsewhere — a chart cannot be strong everywhere, and one claiming to be has been read wrongly.
Where it is genuinely useful: transits
The most practical use of Sarvashtakavarga is in judging a transit. A slow planet crossing a house with a high bindu count is read as finding support there; the same planet crossing a house with a low count is read as meeting more friction.
This is why it appears in Saturn transit and Sade Sati readings: the phase of Sade Sati running through a house with few bindus reads differently from the same phase through a well-supported house. A Sade Sati reading that does not look at the bindus of the houses involved is reading the transit without the terrain.
Common questions
- What is a good Sarvashtakavarga score?
- Above about 30 bindus for a house is read as well supported and below about 25 as needing effort, against an average of 28. The figures are only meaningful within one chart, since every chart sums to 337.
- Why does my chart total 337?
- Because the classical contribution tables are fixed. Every chart distributes the same 337 bindus across twelve houses, which is why the reading is always relative — a strong house implies a weaker one elsewhere.
- Can I compare my SAV scores with someone else's?
- No. Every chart sums to the same total, so a comparison between people measures nothing. The scores are for comparing houses inside one chart.
- What are the bindu numbers on my free kundli?
- That row is your Sarvashtakavarga: one total per house, in house order starting from the 1st. This page is what they mean.
