Why your kundli is different on two websites
कुंडली अलग क्यों आती है
Why does my kundli show different results on different websites?
Almost always because of settings, not errors. The four usual causes are the ayanamsa, whether the nodes are Mean or True, the house system, and the formula used for a particular divisional chart. Any one of them can move a planet into a different sign or house while both calculations are internally correct.
Ayanamsa: the biggest single cause
Sidereal astrology measures from a fixed starting point in the sky, and the ayanamsa is the offset used to find it. Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the Indian government standard and the one printed panchangs use. Raman's ayanamsa differs from it by roughly a degree; KP's by a smaller amount; others differ more.
A degree is nothing in the middle of a sign and everything at its edge. A planet at 29°30′ of a sign under one ayanamsa is at 0°30′ of the next under another — a different sign, different house, different lordships, and therefore a visibly different reading. We use Lahiri and say so on every report.
Mean node or True node
Rahu and Ketu can be computed two ways. The Mean node moves at a uniform average rate; the True node accounts for the wobble and can differ from it by more than a degree. Near a sign boundary that changes Rahu's sign, which changes a Kaal Sarp finding and anything else read from the nodes.
We use the Mean node, which is the Drik Panchang convention. Neither is wrong; they are different conventions, and a site that does not tell you which it used has left you unable to reconcile two answers.
House system
North Indian practice is overwhelmingly whole sign: the ascendant's whole sign is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Placidus, Sripati and equal-house systems cut the houses differently, so a planet can sit in the 10th house in one system and the 9th in another from the same positions.
We compute whole sign for the rashi chart and Bhava Chalit alongside it, which is the common Indian convention. A Western site using Placidus on a tropical zodiac will differ from us on almost everything, and that is two differences stacked, not one.
Divisional chart formulas
The vargas are where implementations quietly disagree. The D12 is the clearest case: the classical rule counts twelve parts forward from the occupied sign, but some software applies a subtraction formula borrowed from the D11, which produces a different chart entirely.
If two D9s agree and the D12s do not, the formula is usually the reason rather than the birth time.
And sometimes it is the birth time
Before blaming the software, check that both sites received the same birth time, the same place, and the same timezone — including whether the place had a different offset on your birth date. A ten-minute difference in what you typed changes the ascendant sign in about one chart in ten.
The honest test of any calculator is whether it tells you its settings. Ours are on every report: Swiss Ephemeris, Lahiri ayanamsa, sidereal, whole sign, Mean node. If another site will not say, you cannot reconcile the two answers and neither can anyone else.
Common questions
- Which kundli is the correct one?
- Usually both are correct under their own settings. Find out which ayanamsa, node convention and house system each used — once those match, the charts will match too.
- Why is my moon sign different on two sites?
- Most often the ayanamsa, if the Moon is near a sign boundary. A Western site is a different matter entirely: it uses the tropical zodiac, which runs about 24 degrees from the sidereal one, so most people get a different sign.
- Which ayanamsa should I use?
- Lahiri, if you want to match Indian practice and the printed panchang. It is the government standard. The important thing is to stay with one rather than comparing readings across different ones.
- My Rahu is in a different sign on another site. Why?
- Probably Mean versus True node. They can differ by more than a degree, which changes the sign when Rahu is near a boundary — and with it any Kaal Sarp finding.
