Birth time not known: what a kundli can still tell you
जन्म समय पता न हो
What can be read from a kundli if the birth time is not known?
A great deal, as long as you know which parts to trust. Over 143 charts shifted by fifteen minutes, the current mahadasha lord changed in only 2.1% and the Atmakaraka in 2.1%, while the Navamsa ascendant changed in 100%. So the Moon, the dasha sequence and the Jaimini karakas stay usable without an exact time; the ascendant and the divisional charts do not.
What actually breaks, measured
We took 143 real charts across twelve cities and five decades of birth years, moved each birth time by one, five, ten and fifteen minutes, and counted what changed. The results split cleanly into two groups, and the split is the whole answer to this question.
The things that barely move: the Moon's sign and nakshatra, the Vimshottari mahadasha lord (changed in 2.1% of charts at fifteen minutes), and the Jaimini chara karakas including the Atmakaraka (also 2.1%). These are computed from planetary positions, and planets do not move far in a quarter of an hour.
The things that break: the Navamsa ascendant changed in 100% of charts at fifteen minutes — and in 9.8% at one minute. The Dashamsa ascendant changed in 99.3%. The birth ascendant itself changed sign in 14.0%, and the antardasha lord in 16.1%.
So what can you actually use
If you do not know your birth time, a Moon-based reading is honest and a lagna-based one is not. That means: your rashi and nakshatra, the Vimshottari dasha you are running and roughly when it changes, Sade Sati and the Dhaiya periods (all counted from the Moon), Gajakesari and the other planet-to-planet yogas, and your Atmakaraka.
What you should not accept without a time: an ascendant-based personality reading, house placements, anything from the Navamsa or Dashamsa, Mangal dosha reckoned from the lagna, and any Panch Mahapurusha yoga — all of which depend on where the ascendant falls.
A reading that gives you all of it anyway, from a time you half-remember, has not told you which half it invented.
What we do with an approximate time
Our checkout asks whether your birth time is exact, approximate or unknown, and that answer travels with the order. When it is not exact the engine sets a low-confidence flag on the ascendant, the report leans on the Moon-based reading, and the chart page says on its face that the time was approximate.
That is not a disclaimer added to protect us. It changes which sections of the report carry weight, and it is the difference between a reading you can use and one that looks complete because nothing admitted it was guessing.
If you can narrow it down at all
Even a rough window helps. A birth certificate, a hospital record, an entry in a family diary, or a parent remembering it was before or after a particular meal or prayer — any of these narrow the ascendant to one or two signs, and that is often enough to make the house placements usable.
A noon chart, which is what many free sites quietly use when no time is given, is not a middle option. It is one specific ascendant presented as though it were yours.
Common questions
- Can I get a kundli without my birth time?
- Yes, and a lot of it is reliable — the Moon sign and nakshatra, the dasha sequence, Sade Sati and the Atmakaraka. What is not reliable is the ascendant and everything that depends on it, including all the divisional charts.
- How much does fifteen minutes actually matter?
- Over 143 charts: the mahadasha lord changed in 2.1%, the ascendant sign in 14.0%, and the Navamsa ascendant in 100%. It depends entirely on which part of the chart you are asking about.
- What does a site do when I leave the birth time blank?
- Most silently use noon or sunrise, which produces a specific ascendant and then reads it as though it were yours. We ask you to say that the time is approximate, flag the ascendant as low-confidence, and lean the reading on the Moon.
- Is a Moon-based reading inferior?
- It is narrower, not weaker. The classical convention reads transits from the Moon anyway, and the dasha sequence — which is most of a timing reading — is seeded from the Moon's nakshatra.
