Saptamsa (D7): the divisional chart for children
सप्तांश
What is the Saptamsa or D7 chart used for?
The Saptamsa is the seventh divisional chart, read for children and progeny. Each sign is divided into seven parts of about 4°17′. It is read alongside the 5th house of the birth chart and its lord, and like every varga it refines that reading rather than replacing it.
What it is read for
The 5th house of the birth chart carries children, and the Saptamsa is the division traditionally used to look at that subject more closely — the 5th house of the D7, its lord, and Jupiter's position within it being the usual points.
Why we write about this carefully
Questions about children are among the most painful a person brings to astrology, and among the easiest to answer irresponsibly. Classical texts state outcomes in absolute terms. We do not, and our reports do not: no report of ours predicts the absence of children, and no reading we write treats a chart as a medical finding.
What a D7 reading can honestly offer is timing considerations alongside the dasha, and the areas of life the 5th house touches more broadly — creativity, teaching, what a person brings into being. Anyone who needs an answer about fertility needs a doctor, and we say so in the reports themselves.
Common questions
- Can the D7 chart tell me how many children I will have?
- Classical texts make such statements. We do not, and we do not write reports that do. A chart is not a medical finding, and this is a question where a confident astrological answer can do real harm.
- Which house is read for children?
- The 5th house of the birth chart and its lord, with the Saptamsa used to refine that reading and Jupiter considered throughout as the natural significator.
