Dwadashamsa (D12): the divisional chart for parents

द्वादशांश

What is the Dwadashamsa or D12 chart used for?

The Dwadashamsa is the twelfth divisional chart, read for parents and lineage. Each sign is divided into twelve parts of 2°30′, counted forward from the sign itself. The 4th house of the D12 is read for the mother and the 9th for the father, alongside the same houses in the birth chart.

What the D12 is for

Where the birth chart's 4th and 9th houses carry the mother and the father, the Dwadashamsa is the division used to look at those relationships and at what a person inherits — circumstance, family position, the conditions one is born into rather than the ones one makes.

The division is the simplest of the set: twelve parts of 2°30′, counted forward from the occupied sign. Our engine's D12 follows that forward count; some software applies a different subtraction formula borrowed from the D11, which produces a different chart and is a common source of two readings disagreeing.

Common questions

What is the D12 chart used for?
Parents and lineage. The 4th house of the D12 is read for the mother and the 9th for the father, alongside the same houses of the birth chart.
Why do two D12 charts sometimes differ?
Because of the formula. The D12 counts twelve parts forward from the occupied sign; some implementations apply a subtraction formula taken from the D11 instead, which gives a different chart.
