Karakamsha: How It Is Found and What It Is Used For

कारकांश

What is the Karakamsha in Jaimini astrology?

The Karakamsha is the sign your Atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa (D9) chart. Jaimini astrology treats it as a second ascendant for the soul: houses are counted from it, and the 12th sign from the Karakamsha is where the Ishta Devata, the personal deity, is read. Because the Navamsa changes every 3°20′, it needs an accurate birth time.

Finding the Karakamsha in two steps

First find the Atmakaraka: rank the seven planets Sun to Saturn by degree within their signs, ignoring the signs, and take the highest. Then look at the Navamsa (D9) chart and note the sign that planet occupies there. That sign is the Karakamsha.

Some practitioners mark the Karakamsha sign on the birth chart (D1) and read houses from it there; others read it within the Navamsa itself. Both are established practice. What matters is to use one consistently. VedikPatrika's calculators read the 12th from the Karakamsha within the Navamsa.

What is read from it

The best-known use is the Ishta Devata: the planet occupying the 12th sign from the Karakamsha, or aspecting it, or failing both the ruler of that sign, indicates the personal deity. Sun points to Shiva or Rama, Moon to Krishna or Gauri, Mars to Subrahmanya or Hanuman, Mercury to Vishnu, Jupiter to Rama or Vamana, Venus to Mahalakshmi, Saturn to Hanuman or Shani, Rahu to Durga or Kali, and Ketu to Ganesha or Skanda.

Jaimini texts also describe what planets placed in the Karakamsha itself, and in the houses from it, say about the soul's inclinations and path. Those readings are broader and vary more between commentators, so a careful reading states which one it follows.

Common questions

Is the Karakamsha the same as the Navamsa lagna?
No. The Navamsa lagna is the ascendant of the D9 chart and depends on birth time. The Karakamsha is wherever your Atmakaraka falls in the D9, which is often a different sign.
Why does the Karakamsha need an exact birth time?
The Navamsa divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′. A planet near a boundary can move into the next Navamsa sign with a small change in time, which moves the Karakamsha and everything counted from it.
Can the Atmakaraka and the Ishta Devata planet be the same?
Yes, if the Atmakaraka itself sits in, aspects, or rules the 12th sign from its own Navamsa sign. It is not the usual case, and the two are found by different steps.
