Jaimini Astrology: Atmakaraka, Karakamsha and Ishta Devata

जैमिनी ज्योतिष

What is Jaimini astrology and how is it different from Parashari astrology?

Jaimini astrology is a system attributed to the sage Jaimini and his Jaimini Sutras. Its signature tools are the chara karakas — planets ranked by degree, with the highest as the Atmakaraka — and the Karakamsha, the Atmakaraka's Navamsa sign. It is used alongside Parashari astrology, most often for questions of the soul's path and the Ishta Devata.

The seven chara karakas

Parashari astrology gives each planet fixed significations: Venus for marriage, Jupiter for children, and so on. Jaimini adds a movable layer that differs for every chart. The seven planets Sun to Saturn are ranked by degree within their signs, highest first: Atmakaraka (self), Amatyakaraka (career and counsel), Bhratrikaraka (siblings), Matrikaraka (mother), Putrakaraka (children), Gnatikaraka (rivals and obstacles) and Darakaraka (spouse). An 8-karaka version adds Rahu and a Pitrikaraka (father).

Why the Atmakaraka matters most

The Atmakaraka is read as the significator of the soul, and its Navamsa sign, the Karakamsha, becomes a second ascendant for spiritual and life-path questions. Each planet in that role carries its own theme in the Jaimini teaching tradition — the pages below cover each of the seven.

Common questions

Do I need Jaimini astrology if I already have a Parashari reading?
Not necessarily. They are complementary. Jaimini tools are most often added for specific questions — the Atmakaraka, the Karakamsha, the Ishta Devata — rather than replacing the Parashari reading.
Are Rahu and Ketu used as karakas?
In the common 7-karaka scheme, no. An 8-karaka scheme includes Rahu, counting its degree in reverse because it moves backwards. Know which scheme a reading uses.
