Numerology in Indian Practice: Mulank, Bhagyank and Name Numbers
अंक ज्योतिष
How does Indian numerology work?
Indian numerology reduces numbers to a single digit from one to nine and reads each through a ruling graha — 1 Surya, 2 Chandra, 3 Guru, 4 Rahu, 5 Budh, 6 Shukra, 7 Ketu, 8 Shani, 9 Mangal. Mulank comes from the day of birth, bhagyank from the whole date, and the name number from the spelling of your name using the Chaldean system.
The three numbers, and what separates them
Mulank, the root number, is the digital root of the day you were born — the 23rd gives 2+3 = 5, whatever the month and year. Bhagyank, the destiny number, reduces the entire date, which makes it far more specific to an individual. The name number is different in kind: it comes from the letters of your name rather than from a date, which is why it is the only one of the three that can be changed. When mulank and bhagyank land on the same digit, that number's influence is traditionally read as reinforced.
Every number is read through a graha
This is the mechanism that connects Indian numerology to Jyotish and the reason its number descriptions are not arbitrary. One belongs to Surya, two to Chandra, three to Guru, four to Rahu, five to Budh, six to Shukra, seven to Ketu, eight to Shani and nine to Mangal. Once the assignment is fixed, everything else follows from what classical astrology already says about those grahas — including compatibility between two numbers, which is read from the classical friendship table between their ruling planets.
Chaldean and Pythagorean are not the same system
Name numbers can be calculated two ways. The Pythagorean system assigns letters values one through nine in alphabetical order. The Chaldean system assigns them by sound, uses only one through eight, and leaves nine out as set apart. Indian numerology generally uses Chaldean, which is what this site's name-number calculator uses. The two systems can give the same name different numbers — that is a difference of method, not an error in either.
What numerology cannot do
Mulank and bhagyank use only the date of birth. No time, no place, no planetary positions. Millions of people share your mulank while their charts have nothing else in common, and a system that cannot distinguish between them cannot say anything specific about your life. Numerology is worth treating as an interesting parallel reading and a pointer toward which graha to examine — it is not a substitute for a birth chart, and anyone presenting it as one is overselling it.
The nine numbers and their grahas
This assignment is the whole mechanism. Once a number has a graha, its character — and its compatibility with other numbers — follows from what classical astrology already says about that planet.
| Mulank | Ruling graha | Birth dates |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Surya (Sun) सूर्य | 1, 10, 19, 28 |
| 2 | Chandra (Moon) चंद्र | 2, 11, 20, 29 |
| 3 | Guru (Jupiter) गुरु | 3, 12, 21, 30 |
| 4 | Rahu राहु | 4, 13, 22, 31 |
| 5 | Budh (Mercury) बुध | 5, 14, 23 |
| 6 | Shukra (Venus) शुक्र | 6, 15, 24 |
| 7 | Ketu केतु | 7, 16, 25 |
| 8 | Shani (Saturn) शनि | 8, 17, 26 |
| 9 | Mangal (Mars) मंगल | 9, 18, 27 |
Common questions
- What is the difference between mulank and bhagyank?
- Mulank is the digital root of the day of birth alone. Bhagyank reduces the whole date — day, month and year — so it is much more specific to an individual. Both fall between one and nine.
- Which planet rules which number?
- 1 Surya, 2 Chandra, 3 Guru, 4 Rahu, 5 Budh, 6 Shukra, 7 Ketu, 8 Shani, 9 Mangal. A number's character is read from its graha, which is what keeps the descriptions consistent with astrology.
- Is numerology part of Vedic astrology?
- It is a parallel system rather than a branch of Jyotish. The two are connected through the assignment of grahas to numbers, but numerology uses only a date or a name where astrology uses time and place as well.
- Which is correct, Chaldean or Pythagorean?
- Neither is more correct — they are different methods. Indian numerology generally uses Chaldean, which assigns letters by sound using one to eight and leaves nine out. This site's name calculator uses Chaldean.
- Can I change my numerology by changing my name?
- The name number changes with spelling, which is what name-correction advice is based on. Mulank and bhagyank come from your date of birth and never change.
- Is numerology as reliable as a birth chart?
- No, and it does not claim to be. Mulank and bhagyank use the date alone, so everyone born the same day shares them while their charts differ completely. A chart uses time and place too, which is what makes it specific to a person.
